European Commission, through its Humanitarian Aid & Civil Protection department or ECHO announced an additional grant to UNICEF of five million Sterling Pounds for supporting conflict-affected South Sudanese children.

In a statement on Tuesday, UNICEF South Sudan Representative Jonathan Veitch said the Commission’s generous donation to children shows true commitment.

He added that the funding would allow the UN Children agency to deliver critical support to vulnerable children who fled their homes and communities.

The statement said ECHO support would help expand the agency’s response to the dramatic nutrition crisis in South Sudan and is expected to provide additional aid of vaccines and improve access to water and sanitation.

ECHO expert in South Sudan Laetitia Beuscher said the Commission would continue working with UNICEF to avoid a lost generation in the country.

The statement added that the donation raises ECHO total aid to 9.5 million Sterling Pounds for 2014.
