The chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs urged the United Nations or UN Security Council to levy sanctions against the warring sides in South Sudan.

In his letter addressed to US Ambassador to UN Susan Power on Monday, Ed Royce called on the UN to quickly sanction the South Sudanese government and opposition forces to send a clear message that the international community will not tolerate violations of cessation of hostilities and derailing of the May 9 Agreement.

He called on the Security Council to impose a comprehensive arms embargo on South Sudan because weapons that enter the country only increase atrocities against civilians.

Mr Royce said each day that passes without strong actions from the international community, innocent South Sudanese are at greater risk of a cruel death and starvation.
