US tells warring parties to disengage forces for monitoring

The United States or US called on South Sudan government and SPLM/A in Opposition to begin the disengagement of forces to begin Intergovernmental Authority on Development or IGAD Monitoring and Verification Mechanism do its job on the ground.
 
US State Department spokesperson Marie Harf in a statement on Monday, urged both parties to end attacks and adhere to May 9 and June 10 commitments.
 
She urged President Salva Kiir and Riek Machar to reaffirm their commitment to ensure that all their forces immediately stop fighting.
 
The US diplomat condemned opposition forces’ ground attack on the positions of SPLA in Nasir, Upper Nile State on July 20.
 
The spokesperson added that Nasir residents and other civilians across the country suffered from frequent and horrific acts of violence and human rights abuses since the fighting broke out in mid-December.
 
She called on both parties to negotiate in good faith under IGAD and embrace efforts of the African Union, United Nations and the international community to support the peace process.
 
The US diplomat reminded warring parties of President Obama’s April 3 Executive Order to sanction those obstructing peace initiative and humanitarian operations and commit human rights abuses.
