Inter-Governmental Authority on Development or IGAD extraordinary session of heads of state assembly urged the government and SPLM/A in opposition to start the second phase of negotiations on February 7 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Vice President James Wani Igga told journalists on Monday in Juba that IGAD came with seventeen resolutions on South Sudan crisis including prompt resumption of negotiations on root causes of the conflict and the way forward.
The Vice President said the Assembly called on the government and the international community to speed up the redress of humanitarian crisis and the conflict in the country.
He said the warring parties were asked to protect civilians against human rights violations.
The assembly instructed IGAD’s Special Envoys to establish Monitoring and Verification Mechanism within 48 hours to report violations of Cessation of Hostilities Agreement.
The government and opposition forces continue to trade accusations of violations, the recent being the recapture of Leer town in Unity State by government forces which the Vice President denied.
IGAD Monitoring and Verification Mechanism advanced team reportedly arrived in Juba on Sunday.
