Fish farmers in Yei and Lainya Counties of Central Equatoria State are embarking on fish farming to prevent importation of fish from Uganda.
UMCOR Fisheries Project Assistant Alhaj Aggrey said there were 30 fish ponds in Yei and Lainya Counties for 14 fish farmers’ groups, Easter Radio reported.
He added that fish farming was introduced to encourage consumption of local fresh fish instead of importing stale ones from Uganda.
Mr Alhaj disclosed that some fish farmers in Mugwo Payam of Yei River County and in Kenyi Payam of Lainya County sell fresh fish including tilapia niloticus and other species for local consumption.
A local fish farmer Augustino Beke Dodo appreciated UMCOR for the initiative, free capacity building and technical support to uplift thier living standards.
Farmers appealed for more dam scoop and other fish pond tools to ease expansion of the fish farming project.
State Fisheries’ Ministry official Mekki Zachariah called for collaboration between government and development partners to deliver services to local farmers to boost fish farming in the state.
