Torit Hospital embarked on outreach programs in an effort to ensure many people know their HIV status and those who test positive are given drugs after adequate counselling without fear.

Lasuba David, who manages HIV Aids department at Torit Civil Hospital, said the exercise registered success with a large turn-up of people compared to static testing sites at health facilities, Emmanuel Radio reported.

He attributed the large turn-up on outreach programs to a negative attitude towards those who go for HIV test to the hospital.

Mr Lasuba said on outreach program centres health teams received an average of 30 to 50 people per day much more than those who go to the Hospital in a month.

Torit Civil Hospital conducts HIV Aids outreach programs in Kudo, Bur, Tirangore and Hiyala payams to ensure that the rural community gets access to the services.

Torit Youth Centre, constructed by the state ministry of Health with funds from Aids Alliance, also offers a suitable atmosphere for young people to get advice on reproductive health.

Augustine Okwahi, the state director of South Sudan Aids Commission, attributed the boost of outreach HIV counselling and testing to distance to the services.

He noted similar large turn-ups for voluntary counselling and testing at outreach programs in Kapoeta, Ikwoto and Lafon-Lopa areas that do not have permanent centres.

The state health Minister Margaret Itto said the World Health Organization, Aids Alliance, UNICEF and Caritas Torit stepped up awareness campaigns and services.

Dr Itto added that the state provides counselling to over 1,100 HIV positive clients, and over 390 others are receiving antiretroviral treatment and the rest on chronic care.

She said about 22, 000 people are being sensitized about Aids.
