Yei River authorities celebrated World Aids Day on Monday calling for increased awareness campaigns with leaders to teach the communities on preventive measures.

Yei River County Aids Commission Chairperson Issa Chris Gordon told the gathering in Yei that most policy and decision makers, community, cultural and religious leaders have little knowledge about HIV, Easter Radio reported.

Mr Issa called for more support to the commission in order to enlighten leaders at their working places about HIV and Aids for them to be more active in prevention within the communities.

Yei Mayoress Oba Cecelia Tito called on the people to take preventive measures and refrain from reckless behaviours.

She urged the people to cooperate with organizations and government to increase the awareness in the communities to fight Aids and hunger.

Mayoress Oba said some people tend to neglect preventive measures when found HIV positive.

The World Aids Day was celebrated under the theme ‘Working towards zero new Aids infections, zero discrimination and zero Aids related deaths by 2015.’
