UN recommits to human rights principles

The United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General in South Sudan said the UN recommitted to promote fundamental principles of human rights, dignity and equality of men and women.
 
Hilde Johnson made the statement during the United Nations Day in Juba.
 
She said it was time to reduce the suffering undermining human dignity in South Sudan and the entire world.
 
M Johnson pointed out that there was need for vigorous support to build fragile institutions in the country.
 
She said the beauty and strength of South Sudan lay in its cultural diversity.
 
The UNMISS chief called for unity in diversity.
 
Foreign Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin commended the UN support during the disarmament process in Jonglei State.
 
He said UNMISS played a greater role in protecting human rights, civilians and supported security reforms and humanitarian aid.
 
Dr Marial expressed the government’s willingness to sign all UN treaties including prohibition of chemical weapons.
 
The officials made their statements on UN Day celebration today in the UN House in Juba.
