The Government of Western Bahr El Ghazal is set to convene a Greater Bah El Ghazal inter-state conference to put in place measures that combat the influx of children into the streets in collaboration with the National Democratic Institute.
This came after a research by the State Ministry of Youth and Sport showed that most of the street children in Wau come from the neighbouring states.Youth and Sport State Minister Archangelo Anyar Anyar told a public rally on street children that there is a strong need to address the problems that force children out of their homes instead of merely sending them back to their families.
The minister recommended an inter-state conference on street children to lay down strategies against street children influx into towns.
Mr Anyar said there were 400 boys and four girls in the streets of Wau.
He said the parents of these children have to be identified and reasons found for them to be on the streets with the cooperation of NGOs and civil society groups.
Mr Anyar remarked that UNICEF identified the families of 50 street children and sent them back with some help, including food, cloths and money, and parents sent another 100 children to the streets to get similar aid.
The public rally was called in order to consult the community about better solutions to curb the rampant increase of street children in Wau.
