The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Torit, His Lordship Emmanuel Bernardino Lowi Napeta, has urged the Eastern Equatoria State Government to strengthen security along the Torit–Juba highway following a series of attacks targeting travellers.
The Bishop made the call amid growing concerns over insecurity along major roads and reported cases of child abduction in parts of Eastern Equatoria.
On September 3, a group of mourners reportedly travelling to Juba from Ikwoto County was attacked at Jebel Malok, with reports of loss of life.
The incident followed other reports of attacks involving travellers and Church personnel along the Torit–Juba road.
Meanwhile, local authorities and communities have also raised concerns over child abductions. Last week, Omeo Head Chief Okeny Gabriel Gino reported that four children from the same family had been abducted by unknown individuals.
Bishop Napeta called on authorities to reinforce security along major roads and in vulnerable communities.
He also appealed to communities to remain vigilant and urged those involved in criminal activities to abandon violence and embrace peaceful ways of resolving grievances.
