President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday received the African Union High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, following the conclusion of the envoy’s five-day consultation mission in South Sudan.

The meeting at the State House in Juba provided an opportunity for Kikwete to brief President Kiir on the findings of his extensive engagements with key stakeholders involved in South Sudan’s ongoing political transition.

During his mission, the former Tanzanian president held consultations with a broad spectrum of actors, including political parties, opposition groups, the National Elections Commission (NEC), the National Constitutional Review Commission (NCRC), the Political Parties Council (PPC), representatives of the African Union (AU), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), members of the diplomatic community, and other stakeholders.

The consultations focused on assessing progress in the implementation of South Sudan’s transitional roadmap, preparations for elections, constitutional-making processes, and efforts aimed at fostering political consensus and lasting peace.

Kikwete’s mission forms part of the African Union’s continued support for South Sudan’s peace process and democratic transition. The AU envoy has been engaging with national leaders and stakeholders to encourage dialogue, inclusivity, and the implementation of commitments under the revitalized peace agreement.

The outcome of the consultations is expected to inform the African Union’s ongoing engagement with South Sudan as the country advances toward key milestones in its transition, including the conduct of elections and the completion of constitutional reforms.

President Kiir reaffirmed his government’s commitment to working with regional and international partners to advance peace, stability, and democratic governance in the country.
