Author: CRN News Desk |The Ministry of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services has recognized nine media practitioners from both public and independent media houses for their outstanding contribution to journalism in South Sudan. Each award recipient received a cheque worth 5 million South Sudanese Pounds, approximately 1,000 US dollars.
The awards were announced during a Media Dinner organized by the ministry in Juba, bringing together journalists, media executives, and other stakeholders from across the country.
Speaking during the event, the Minister of ICT and Postal Service, Hon. Ateny Wek Ateny, said the recognition serves as a testament to the important work journalists continue to do in the country.
He noted that the initiative marks the beginning of an annual award program aimed at encouraging professionalism and excellence in journalism.
According to the award committee, 28 media practitioners were nominated, with only nine selected as winners. Among the awardees, five were from the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), while four represented independent media institutions, including radio stations and newspapers.
Among the winners was SSBC news anchor Rejoice Samson Tio has been honored for her exceptional contribution to journalism in South Sudan.
Rejoice received the prestigious Longest Serving News Anchor Award in recognition of her years of unwavering dedication, professionalism, integrity, and service to the people of the Republic of South Sudan.
Sebit William from Radio Miraya received the Most Innovative Journalist Award in recognition of his creativity, dedication, and commitment to impactful storytelling and public interest journalism.
Eye Radio journalist Michael Daniel won the Best Gender and Inclusive Reporting Award for his efforts in promoting balanced and inclusive reporting on issues affecting both men and women.
Radio Maria journalist Oloya Noal was honored with an award, while CRN Editor Chuol Jany earned a nomination in the Multitasking category.
Popular cartoonist Adjia Achuil has received the Media Honorary Award for Best Cartoonist of the Year in recognition of his creativity and contribution to the media industry.
Meanwhile, Jenifer James of Dawn Newspaper was honored as an Outstanding Print Journalist for her excellence and dedication to print journalism in South Sudan.
The Media Dinner and awards ceremony were organized by the Ministry of ICT and Postal Services as part of efforts to promote quality journalism and strengthen the media sector in South Sudan.
Meanwhile, South Sudan ranked 118th in this year’s World Press Freedom Index released by Reporters Without Borders, compared to 108th place last year out of 180 countries surveyed.
