President Salva Kiir Mayardit has directed the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs to expedite legal sector reforms as the country prepares for anticipated democratic elections later this year.

The directive was issued on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, during a briefing by Michael Makuei Lueth. The meeting reviewed ongoing activities within the ministry, as well as the minister’s recent engagement at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

During the briefing, Makuei reported steady progress on key court cases, noting that several proceedings are approaching completion. He also highlighted measures aimed at strengthening the ministry’s capacity to deliver improved legal services, part of broader efforts to reform state institutions.

The push for accelerated reforms comes at a critical time, as South Sudan moves closer to holding long-awaited elections, with authorities seeking to reinforce the legal framework and enhance public confidence in the justice system.
