Tonj South County local authorities continue to implement the restriction on overfishing in an order released last year.

The exercise is being implemented to reduce the high risk of losing young aquatic animals in the river and give them time to reproduce.

The Director of Animal Resources; William Malot Dhieu warns fishermen to stop overfishing, and also avoid the use of plastic water debris nets.

He says that fishermen are becoming experts and that they are catching every fish in the river and if they are not warned, water will remain without fish shortly

William Malot added that they had rules which were set last year to prevent all the dangerous types of nets existing in the river, ’therefore people are not supposed to use these nets,” Malot insists.

He says that their rules were incorporated and passed when people started violating the laws of the Ministry of Animal Resources.

Director Malot Dhieu cautioned people against misconduct and asked them to stop harmful and overfishing practices in the river anticipating that anyone who will be caught using mosquito nets for fishing will face consequences.

He condemns the fishing method that fishermen use to do by crossing the entire river with a net that targets any fish that is crossing to the other side of the river citing that this is a massacre act against aquatic animals.

The Director of Animals’ Resources disclosed that it is their duty as government to aware the people on ways how to manage the river well, and the people should listen and implement these orders.

The Director of Animals’ Resources and Fisheries was speaking to Don Bosco radio in Tonj South County, Warrap State.
