The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (UN FAO) has launched an ecosystem of digital solutions platform to leverage e-agriculture to achieve maximum farming efficiency.

The digital platform is created to harmonize database for farmers in South Sudan and help in disbursement of farm inputs.

It will also capture beneficiary bio-data, demographic data, fingerprint, images, production data, inputs demand, and sizes of field among others.

The digital management system is intended to serve an extension and weather advisory mobile platform as well as a seed management system.

The National Minister of Agriculture and Food Security; Josephine Lagu, said there is a need to accelerate the pace in digitalizing agriculture sector and promote youth participation.

Josephine stated that the future of agriculture in South Sudan is going to be underpinned by digitalization and the increase of youth participation.

To transform agriculture to the next level, there must be science based, youth-driven and more importantly digitalized, “the Minister adds.”

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security emphasized on the stability of lasting peace and security in the country so that the government and farmers benefit from such platforms.

When peace and stability is guaranteed, everything else will follow, “says Josephine Lagu.”

The representative of FAO in South Sudan Meshack Malo said such platforms are very important because the future of farming lies in e-agriculture and technological innovations.

Malo added that the launching of the platform is part of UN FAO’s ongoing efforts to ensure South Sudan is not left behind in digitalization processes.

He explained that an e-extension and weather Advisory platform is a key part of the package mobile based platform to facilitate dissemination of extension services as well as weather information.

The speakers made these remarks during the launching of agriculture platform in Juba.
