The International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) evacuated 300 orphans and 71 caretakers in Khartoum on Friday.

The children belonging to the Mygoma Orphanage home in Khartoum were successfully relocated to a safer location following months of war in the Sudan’s capital.

ICRC Protection Coordinator in Sudan, Ms. Carin Naike says the children were relocated to Wad Madani, an area approximately 200 KM away from the Capital, Khartoum.

She said the nannies and orphanage director did their best, but the majority of the children need medical attention.

“The nannies and orphanage director were doing their best, but there were many children with medical needs,” Naike stated.

The Protection Coordinator reveals that the team finds it difficult to locate an emergency facility for the children to receive proper medical care.

She added that “It became increasingly urgent to find them a better place where they could receive the proper and appropriate medical care that they need.”

She [Carin] also highlighted that the ICRC team faced significant challenges, primarily in the logistical aspect of evacuating the children.

For Carin, organizing buses, food, and other essentials posed considerable obstacles however, through a remarkable display of teamwork, everything worked out well.

Since the outbreak of conflict in Sudan, many people including; women, children, the elderly, and religious leaders have been trapped in Khartoum.
