Committee to Protect Journalists’ report indicates South Sudan is now the second worst impunity offender in Africa and the fifth globally after Somalia.

Committee to Protect Journalists in its report says security agents have harassed press personnel, raided media outlets to limit coverage of opposition activities.

Five journalists were killed in January 25 this year when unidentified gunmen ambushed an official convoy in Western Bahr al Ghazal State where a total of 11 people died in the incident.

The Committee states that the victims were shot and attacked with machetes before being set on fire and that no attackers in either incident has been apprehended.

It laments that in at least four out of every 10 journalists killed, received threats before they were killed but the threats have never been investigated by authorities.

The research shows that political groups including armed factions are the suspected perpetrators in 46 percent of murder cases and that government and military officials are considered the leading suspects in nearly 25 percent.

The Committee to Protect Journalists says it is investigating the murder of the sixth journalist Moi Peter Julius who was shot at the back in August 19 while walking home from work.
