South Sudan political parties said it was unconstitutional for the government to declare extension of its term of office.
The parties reacted to the Council of Ministers cancelation of elections and extension of the President and the National Legislature for two years, wondering how the government amended the constitution to buy itself more lease on life.
United Democratic Party Secretary-General Martin Aligo Abe said regime’s decision to extend its term proved that it is only concerned about continuing in power by all means.
He said the decision to amend the Transitional Constitution should be taken by all political forces in the country for specific reasons and clear programme.
The Parties continued that the additional term of office few days before the Addis Ababa meeting scheduled for February 19 is ill-advised and is an attempt to spoil the peace process.
The Secretary General said the government decision to cancel the elections is against the electoral law.
