United Nations or UN denied national and regional media reports that it was planning to make South Sudan its protectorate, should conflict settlement fail in the country.

In a statement CRN obtained on Tuesday UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon’s Spokesperson described the information in New York press briefing as completely false.

The Spokesperson added that neither Ban Ki Moon nor UN Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS Chief Ellen Margrethe L√∏j is aware of any plan or discussion for such an action.

Ms L√∏j said South Sudan is an independent sovereign state recognized by UN and that the Mission has no tradition of making sovereign countries protectorates.

She expressed deep concern about ongoing conflict causing untold suffering to the civilian population, calling on warring parties to reach a comprehensive peace agreement without any further delay.
