The investigation into the crash of United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS Mi-8 helicopter on August in Bentiu Unity State indicates that the aircraft was shot down.
In a statement the Mission confirmed a phone call with a staff member in Bentiu on August 17 that SPLM/A in opposition Commander Peter Gadet forces alleged that UNMISS aircraft used to transport government forces, threatening to shoot down the helicopter.
The UNMISS staff member refuted the opposition’s accusations and immediately started sharing information on all its flights into Bentiu with the opposition forces and the SPLA to ensure aircraft safety.
The statement discloses that based on the findings of preliminary probe, it is premature to apportion on blame for the shooting down of the UN helicopter.
It added that a more in-depth technical investigation conducted in compliance with international air safety standards and independent board of inquiry established by the UN would look into the incident.
The statement says the technical investigation would provide additional information to determine the source of helicopter downing.
UNMISS condemned the act, vowing to hold those responsible accountable and that measures would be taken to avoid future attacks.
