United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS condemned the gunfire on its compound in Bentiu, Unity State.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, sustained gunfire which lasted for at least 30 minutes, was heard around the UNMISS camp on Monday morning and that the source of firing was nearby Rubkona Airstrip, where SPLA soldiers are stationed.

UNMISS was informed that SPLA troops were responsible by firing in the air in the celebration of war veterans day.

It added that one child was wounded while inside the UNMISS Protection of Civilian camp and UNMISS recovered nine bullets which penetrated its accommodation and office blocks.

UNMISS expressed serious concern over the incident, calling on SPLA to desist from live fire celebratory exercises in its bases and protection of civilian sites.

It called on national, state, local authorities, including forces to protect all civilians, and ensure that UN premises are protected and take effective measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidences.
