Foreign Affairs Minister confirmed that the United Nations or UN Security Council is visiting Juba on Tuesday to get briefings from the government on the peace process.
Dr Barnaba Marial Benjamin on Monday told journalists at Juba International Airport shortly after touchdown from Ethiopia that the Council also wants to make its position known to the government on how they want the process to proceed and resolve the issue of humanitarian disaster.
The Minister said he was asked by President Salva Kiir to visit Southern African countries including Zimbabwe, Zambia and Kenya to tell them of the government’s commitment to the peace process and inform them of the opposition’s ceasefire violations.
He said the countries he visited expressed readiness to support Inter-governmental Authority on Development or GAD’s initiative to bring peace to South Sudan.
Dr Marial added that the talks were ongoing, accusing the opposition of delaying it by refusing multilateral talks after demanding for it.
He expressed government’s commitment to the negotiations whether multilateral or bilateral.
Dr Marial said the opposition would be accountable to IGAD, UN and African Union because President Salva Kiir Mayardit signed ceasefire agreement and the government forces respect it.
