United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS expressed concerns that SPLM/A in Opposition attack in Nassir town of Upper Nile State represents serious resumption of hostilities.
In a statement on Sunday, the Mission said the attack was a clear violation, calling on the warring parties to comply with the Cessation of Hostilities Agreements.
The statement added that the attack was carried out by opposition forces comprised of a mixture of armed youths and SPLA defectors loyal to Dr Riek Machar.
Acting UNMISS Head, Raisedon Zenenga deplored the attack that came when Intergovernmental Authority on Development or IGAD mediators intensive efforts are underway to convince all parties to resume peace talks in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The Acting Head added that it was worrying that the attack was launched in total disrespect of the presence of IGAD Monitoring and Verification Team deployed in Nassir.
UNMISS urged the warring parties to return to the negotiating table without delay.
The Acting Head added that all of its personnel and IGAD Monitoring and Verification Team stationed at the Mission’s base in Nassir were safe.
