Population of Internally Displaced Persons or IDPs in Melijo camp was discovered to be less than the figure earlier reported.

In a verification exercise conducted on Wednesday 157 households of 722 individual persons recently entered the camp, Emmanuel Radio reported.

The new arrivals increased the number to 3,900 displaced persons in the camp, contrary to five thousand people reported earlier.

Mr Thon Abraham, an elder among the IDPs who tried to oppose the verification exercise said most of the people escaped the camp due to hunger.

He urged the visiting team to explain about the delay of food distribution to the IDPs, wondering whether the government was ready to support them.

Eastern Equatoria state Director for Relief and Rehabilitation Commission John Odongi Simon said food delayed due to conflicting figure of the IDPs in the Camp.

Eastern Equatoria state minister of Gender, and Social Development Paska Hifita who led the verification team to Melijo, said that the exercise enables non-governmental organizations to plan for how to help IDPs.
