Thousands of faithful from Catholic Churches and other denominations gathered on Saturday at Maria Goretti Primary School in Aweil of Northern Behr El Ghazal to attend the burial of Sister Sidonia Aman Tong known as Amandit.
Wau Diocese Catholic Bishop Rudolf Deng Majak who presided over the requiem mass recognized the role played by sister Amandit during her life time by attracting many young people to the Church.
He urged Christians not to cry but to pray for her soul to rest in peace and join Saints and Angels in the Paradise.
Bishop Majak conveyed his condolences to Amandit’s family members and all love ones.
One of the family members said Sister Amandit gave her life to the Church.
The funeral was attended by Presidential Advisor On Religious Affairs who conveyed President’s condolences to the entire Catholic Church for losing Sister Amandit.
The late Sister Sidonia Amandit was born in Kwach of Warrap state in 1895, entered Primary school in Kwajok and Wau between 1922 and 192 and also studied in Uganda and Italy.
She became a sister in 1939 and work as a nurse at Wau Teaching Hospital and founded Maria Goretti School in Awiel in 1978.
The late sister became famous through her spiritual work, promotion of education and her solidarity with the poor people.
She died on Saturday May 24 in Awiel town at the age of 119.
