UN Secretary-General Special Representative also United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS head said it was her personal decision to decline contract extension offer on consultation with Ban Ki-Moon.
Hilde F Johnson said it was time to pass the responsibility over to someone else, adding that she would still be in South Sudan for few weeks until July 8.
She pointed out that she would not have decided to quit the job if hostile campaigns against UNMISS and herself were still tense.
Ms Johnson said she would have dhered to loyalty despite government’s criticisms.
The Special Representative appreciated relative peace in the country and that the relation with the government was getting normal.
Ms Johnson expressed hope that the recommitment signed by President Salva Kiir and SPLM/A in opposition leader Dr Riek Machar would achieve a good result.
Government Spokesperson Michael Makuei Lueth said Hilde Johnson was not quitting, but her term of office was expiring.
He confirmed her meeting with President Salva Kiir, saying she would be going and that they were bidding her a farewell.
