United Nations Mission in South Sudan, UNMISS condemned targeted killings of civilians based on ethnic origins and nationality in Bentiu.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Mission said it strongly condemned the use of Radio Bentiu FM by some individuals of the opposition broadcasting hate speech.
It also appreciated some opposition commanders for broadcasting unity and an end to tribalism messages.
The statement pointed out that hate messages include declaring that certain ethnic groups should not stay in Bentiu and even calling on men from one community to commit vengeful sexual violence against women from another community.
UNMISS Human Rights investigators said Opposition forces upon capture of Bentiu on April 15 and 16 searched a number of places, killing hundreds of civilians after determining their ethnicity or nationality.
Mission’s official Raisedon Zenenga warned that the atrocities had to be fully investigated and the perpetrators and their commanders should be held accountable.
The official called on the warring parties to immediately stop the targeting of innocent, unarmed civilians and that they should respect the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement they signed.
