African Correctional Services Association or ACSA member states discussed inmates’ basic human rights and strategies to engage prisoners in positive human activities.
Interior Minister Aleu Ayieny Aleu returned from South Africa on Saturday where he attended a four-day Ministerial Consultative Forum under African Correctional Services Association.
He said better treatment of prisoners and engagement in productive correctional activities corresponds with universal human rights.
The minister said while in South Africa, they explored ways to engage in collaborative efforts to strengthen relations between correctional and law enforcement institutions to transform correctional services in the continent.
He urged delegates to consider indigenizing African Criminal Justice System as current prisons models are based on colonial concepts of corrections.
Mr Aleu added that most colonial correctional concepts are irrelevant and do not address African cultural expectations.
The Interior Minister made the statement in Juba shortly after return from South Africa.
