Equity Bank terminated beyond 20 staff to reduce their expenditures because many branches were closed down.

Equity Bank Director Kenyi Spencer told CRN on Thursday in a telephone interview that they would not maintain too many redundant staff.

He explained that they were adjusting the bank staff and would call back the laid off employees when they build more branches.

The Director said they lost everything in their branches except a vehicle and a generator due to the ongoing conflict.

He said the bank’s branches in Bor and Rubkona of Upper Nile region were destroyed.

Dr Kenyi lamented that it was unfortunate that banks which could spearhead national economy are destroyed, reducing economic activities of the country.

The Director added that when a bank is affected, it affects so many depositors, borrowers and the government.

He appealed for peaceful environment for economic activities to prosper in South Sudan.

Dr Kenyi said government’s direct payment to staff was also affecting the bank because it uses depositors’ money to lend out money.
