Eastern Equatoria decongested its main prison in Torit by transferring some inmates to the newly built Rwoto Prison in Kapoeta North County.
State Local Government and Law Enforcement Minister Ambrose Lokonoi told Emmanuel Radio that overcrowding poses pathetic and threatening condition to prisoners.
He said Torit Prison should accommodate 200 inmates, but now hosts more.
Minister Lokonoi said the transfer of other prisoners to Rwoto also aimed at engaging them in food production to boost state economy.
He revealed state government’s plans to open Rwoto prison farm in Kapoeta North to help prisoners produce their own food and surplus for sale.
The Minister said the transfer of prisoners to Rwoto was based on prison period of each imate.
He said those who will engage in farming are prisoners with short terms and minor cases ranging from five months to five years.
The relocation of prisoners from Torit to Rwoto in Kapoeta North started last Saturday.
