Yei, Lainya and Morobo Counties Health Centres reported that leprosy was diminishing.

This was revealed during the celebration of 61st World Leprosy Day on Sunday at Yei Catholic Diocese’s St Bakhita Health Centre, Easter Radio reported.

The Centre Director Veronica Rackova said many lepers were cured and the number dropped from 130 patients in 1999 to 28 in 2013.

She said the number of people with disabilities also reduced in the three counties.

Yei Catholic Diocese Secretary General Emmanuel Lodongo Sebit thanked Sister Rackova and her team for their hard work to free the nation from leprosy.

He prayed to God to pour his blessings on them, calling on Sister Rackova to show other NGOs to do the same.

Fr Lodongo called on those cured of leprosy to enlighten communities about the presence of healing centres.

The two speakers were addressing the gathering on Sunday during the World Leprosy Day celebration at St Bakhita Health Centre in Yei.
