United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS failed to protect civilians during the unrest that claimed thousands of lives in the country.
Juba Catholic Archdiocese Auxiliary Bishop Santo Loku Pio in his homily at St Theresa’s Cathedral Kator on Sunday accused the Mission of having interest only in photographing the displaced people for their own gain, Bakhita Radio reported.
He said when the situation worsened in Juba, UNMISS decided only to protect their own staff leaving the suffering people at the hands of church leaders.
Bishop Loku called on South Sudanese not to wait for peace from the UN but rather unite to achieve total freedom in the country.
The Catholic prelate said UNMISS failed to intervene in every difficult situation during the unrest in Juba.
He called for the reduction of the number of the UN peacekeepers in South Sudan.
Bishop Loku pointed out that instead of protecting vulnerable people, the Mission evacuated its staff to the neibouring countries.
He urged South Sudanese to protect themselves because the UN cannot protect them during difficult moments.
Bishop Loku called on Christians to love one another and live together as sons and daughters of South Sudan.
