Over 4,000 people are volunteering with the Red Cross in the country to provide communitarian service to people in need.
South Sudan Red Cross Management Officer Alex Modoyi told journalists in Juba that volunteers were the backbone of the humanitarian organization.
Mr Modoyi said the International Volunteers Day celebrated on Thursday was an opportunity for South Sudan Red Cross to recognize the work of volunteers and pass the message to the community.
He added that the Red Cross involved volunteers in numerous activities.
Mr Modoyi explained that whenever there was an emergency or outbreak, Red Cross volunteers were ready to respond.
UN Volunteers Information Analyst Antonie Hutter said voluntarism was one of the best ways to spend one’s energy.
She urged all youth from around the world to get involved and volunteer for the betterment of their communities.
The officials were talking at the International Volunteers Day celebrated on Thursday under the theme ‘Young, global, active youth volunteering for a better world.’
The celebration that took place at the University of Juba gathered many participants from UN agencies, Red Cross, civil society groups, Government officials and the general public.
