A dozen of journalists from South Sudan and Sudan met in Juba to discuss the role of media in conflict situation.

The dialogue, organized by the Deutsch Welle Academy, was a follow-up of a similar initiative that took place in Berlin, Germany, last year.

Sudan’s ambassador to South Sudan Mutrif Siddiq said in his opening remarks that the relationship between countries is first of all between its peoples and not governments and journalists should reflect it.

He added that journalists are important protagonists to foster peace and prosperity between South Sudan and Sudan.

Mekki Al Moghrabi from Sudan said the current political situation between both Sudans was good.

He urged journalists to seize the moment and contribute to strengthen the relationship between the citizens of both countries.

Atem Yak Atem from South Sudan made a long history of 100 years of media propaganda in the Sudan.

He said South Sudan and Sudan are two sovereign nations that should respect each other because they need one another.

Mr Yak urged journalists to put aside fear and suspicion and report facts.

The participants underlined the need to strengthen cooperation among journalists across the borders.

They added that the dialogue between journalists should also involve neighbouring countries of South Sudan and Sudan to enrich the exchange.
