A journalist at the scene confirmed that he witnessed a riotous attack on an African Union delegation visiting Abyei following a statement referring acceptance of referendum results to Presidents Salva Kiir and Omar El Basher.
Juba Monitor Newspaper reporter Lagu Joseph Jackson, who visited Abyei, told CRN that the attack was triggered by a statement of the AU Peace and Security Council escaping responsibility of recognizing Abyei referendum results.
He added that the statement aroused emotions leading to fainting and instigation of violence to stone AU vehicles.
Mr Lagu confirmed that the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei or UNISFA and security personnel shot into the air to disperse rioters.
He revealed that four Ngok Dinka were hospitalized after fainting.
Abyei Referendum High Committee spokesperson Luka Biong Deng told journalists in Abyei that the visit was largely successful and the AU delegation did not condemn the referendum.
He said the AU apologized for the previous statement that sparked off riots after a meeting in which they understood the decision of unilateral referendum in Abyei in October.
The AU still stands to implement the High Implemental Panel led by Thabo Mbeki roadmap that calls for a referendum to determine Abyei final status.
