Yei River County Commissioner blamed parents for girls’ big school dropouts due to the demand of high dowry.
Juma David Augustine said cultural practices including encouragement of girl’s early marriage and lack of scholarships contributed heavily to school dropouts, Easter Radio reported.
He called on parents and guardians to value girls’ education.
Mr Juma cited poor wages and lack of shelters for teachers as some obstacles to better education in the county.
He said he wrote to all payam directors telling them to build shelters for teachers deployed to their payams in order to better education.
Mr Juma promised to supervise the implementation of his order to avoid complains of lack of shelters for teachers.
The Commissioner made the statements on Tuesday during of celebrations of the second anniversary of independence at Yei Freedom Square.
