EU calls South Sudan to national reconciliation

The European Union called on South Sudan to ‘demonstrate its commitment to national reconciliation, democratic and transparent governance and respect for human rights as the core of its vision for the future.’
 
EU Foreign Affairs Chief Catherine Ashton said in a statement marking South Sudan’s second independence anniversary that the Union ‘recognises the enormous challenges which South Sudan has faced since its independence.’
 
She praised the people of South Sudan for their resilience and determination.
 
Ms Ashton singled out the resolution of internal conflicts, accountability for human rights violations and strengthening government institutions as steps to overcome current difficulties and foundation of sustainable development and economic growth.
 
She cited the need for South Sudan ‘to settle its outstanding differences with the Republic of Sudan in order to establish mutually beneficial relations for the benefit of both countries.’
 
Ms Ashton expressed the EU’s commitment to help South Sudan become a democratic and prosperous nation.
