A driver run over and killed a catholic priest in Juba on Sunday night and fled the scene.
Fr Thomas Ladu Angelo was killed in front of Equatoria Pharmacy in Juba between 9:00 and 10:00 PM, Bakhita Radio reported.
Juba Catholic Archdiocese Secretary-General Gabriel Asida said doctors tried to identify Fr Lodu after the accident using his mobile phone.
He said the Christian community and the clergy of St Joseph’s Parish were taken by surprise when the news of his untimely death broke out.
Assistant Bishop Santo Loku Pio presided over the requiem mass on Monday at St Joseph’s parish.
He told the mourning congregation that Archbishop Paulino Lukudu Loro was informed about the mortal accident and sent his condolences from the hospital in Italy where he is under treatment.
Archbishop Lukudu told the Christians to remain united.
Bishop Loku said it was unfortunate that the driver who ran over Fr. Lodu fled the schene.
He added that the police is investigating the crime.
Fr Asida heads the committee for Fr Lodu’s funeral that includes five priests, three sisters and two family members.
Fr Lodu will be buried on Wednesday at All Saints Parish in Rejaf after a requiem mass at Saint Theresa’s Cathedral in Kator.
The faithful will continue to offer prayers for the soul of Fr Lodu at Saint Joseph’s parish from Monday through Tuesday before the burial.
