The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved a 21-million US dollars credit to support South Sudan’s efforts to provide temporary work for poor people and build the foundations of a social protection system.
World Bank South Sudan Country Director Bella Bird said the amount would be used in Social Safety Net and Skills Development Project to offer temporary employment opportunities to an estimated 21 thousand families and skills development opportunities for another 3,500.In a press statement issued on Monday, Ms Bird said the money will be used in Jonglei, Warrap, Eastern Equatoria and Juba.
Project team leader Endashaw Tadesse Gossa said the project addresses South Sudan’s immediate need to provide support to the poorest families during the agricultural lean season.
He added that the project can support people to emerge from poverty, economic uncertainty, food insecurity, and frequent climate-related threats.
The project will help create a targeting and beneficiary registration system and a payment transfer and monitoring system that can be used to reach the poorest people.
