Tombura-Yambio Catholic Diocese on Tuesday launched a cash transfer project to support vulnerable AIDS orphans with education and health services.

Project Manager Lucy Nadeyo said the diocese in partnership with CORDAID agreed to give money to the guardians of the vulnerable orphans whose parents died with AIDS related illnesses, Anisa Radio reported.

Ms Nadeyo said 120 out of 340 vulnerable orphans were selected for the pilot project that runs for 12 months.

She added that every month, each orphan will receive 50 US dollars through Equity Bank.

Equity Bank Marketing Officer Kennedy Kizza explained that each guardian has to open an account for the orphan whereby the money would be deposited and classified according to the priorities to avoid mismanagement by guardians.

The guardians were trained on how to care for the orphans’ basic needs, console them and manage well the resources given for their education, health and livelihoods.
