The UN Security Council on Wednesday extended the mandate of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei or UNISFA until November 30.

The Council also increased the number of troops by more than 1,100 to 5,326, as recommended by the UN Secretary-General, UN News reported.

The troop boost is meant to provide additional resources “to support fully” the Joint Border Verification and Monitoring Mechanism tasked with monitoring the security situation in the Safe Demilitarized Border Zone.

The Council welcomed the redeployment of Sudanese and South Sudanese military and police personnel from Abyei and demanded Sudan to redeploy all remaining military and police immediately without preconditions.

The Council reiterated that “the Abyei Area shall be demilitarized from any forces other than UNISFA and the Abyei Police Service.”
