The life of a slaughtered person cannot be compensated by the life another person.
Yei Diocese Financial administration Alex Lodiong Sakor made the statement while commenting on the Transitional Constitution Articles 21 sub article 1, 2 and 3 for restriction of death penalty, Easter Radio reported. He said that money paid in compensation of the death of a person is not equivalent to the life of the person who was killed.
The cleric added that the money paid in the court cannot contribute like the person who was killed.
Fr Lodiong called for the sensitization of the community to love life and work for development.
He explained that death penalty was there since but it did not help people to stop killing.
Fr Lodiong said death penalty can only be imposed when the status of mind of the offender is proof beyond doubt that he cannot improve in any way.
He said killing the offender cannot give the offender a chance of correction but only life imprisonment would save as the best option because a person will realize that what he or she did was bad.
Fr Lodiong made the comments on Saturday when he was called to answer a question on the “stance of the church on death penalty”.
