The assassination of the Paramount Chief on Saturday was meant to frustrate the process of Abyei Referendum.

Government spokesperson Barnaba Marial Benjamin told the press on Monday that there are elements that are against the Abyei referendum scheduled for October.

Dr Marial said President Salva Kiir wrote a letter of protest to the UN Secretary-General, UN Security Council and to Thabo Mbeki, the head of the African Union High Implementation Panel.

He said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sent message of condolences to the Abyei community, and the republics of South Sudan and Ethiopia.

Dr Marial said Mr Ban strongly condemned the attack and the killing of the Ngok Dinka paramount chief Kuol Deng Kuol and one Ethiopian peacekeeper.

He said the UN chief urged the governments of South Sudan and Sudan, and Misseriya and Ngok Dinka communities to remain calm and avoid escalation of the incident.

Dr Marial said the Government of South Sudan condemned and deplored the killing of Chief Deng and urged the UN and AU to investigate the incident and bring the culprits to book.
