The airstrip taken by the army on Tuesday in Okello area, Pibor County of Jonglei State was used by Khartoum to supply rebels with weapons and ammunitions.

Army spokesperson Philip Aguer Panyang told CRN over the phone that the airstrip was a secret landing platform for different planes that Khartoum used to supply AK 47 machine guns, mortars, RPGs and anti-tank launchers to David Yau Yau’s forces.

He said the army also seized a number of broken AK 47 rifles as evidence of airdrops in the same area.

Colonel Aguer explained that area is now under army control.

He said the militias had a big base in the area and were well equipped and the battle was fierce.

Colonel Aguer added that 143 dead rebels were counted after the battle. He said the army lost 20 people.

The figures could not be verified independently.
