Women in South Sudan complained bitterly about the 25 percent affirmative action implementation and called on their fellow women to explore their rights with the Government.
Presidential Advisor for Gender and Human Rights Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior said the 25 percent affirmative action was not being implemented in most government sectors, Bakhita Radio reported. She said only four women are serving as ministers which is not enough to the policy of the affirmative action.
Ms Nyandeng added that the Transitional Constitution spelled clearly the rights of women and women need not to sleep but work for their rights.
South Sudan Democratic Engagement Program Secretary-General Merekaje Lorna said women needed to understand the meaning of affirmative action.
She added that the Transitional Constitution says women have the same rights as men.
She said girls’ education should be a priority to enhance women’s participation in political life.
The statements were made on Thursday during a debate organised by Eye Radio and International Republican Institute under the theme “What if women enjoyed same rights as men in South Sudan?”
