Business people in Jou Market of Wau, Western Bahr El Ghazal, are asking why shop breakings continue under the police’s watch and point fingers to some officials.

Police forces were deployed in all markets of Wau to protect shops during the night and the officers tell traders to close and leave before 6:00 PM.

Traders said looting cases are still common despite of paying the police for the security of the markets.

Last week, thieves broke into a hair salon through the roof and took items worthy 4,000 pounds without being traced.

Salon operator Geofry Serukube explained to Voice of Hope that the thieves cut some iron sheets in the roof to enter into his shop.

He said the robbers took many articles and destroyed others, including mirrors.

Mr Serukube said the market police send shop owners away as early as 5:00 PM to keep the market safe from the thieves but little is done to safeguard the shops.

A gang on Sunday night broke into a boutique in Jou Market and collected a number of items with an estimated value of 8,000 Pounds.

Half of the robbery was recovered.

Boutique operator Aurelio Jermano said one member of the gang who stole his shop was arrested by the security and handed over three bags of stolen goods.

The police claimed the man later escaped after phoning his wife.

Traders are charging that some officers have a hand on the robberies.

Wau Police authorities could not be reached for comments.
