The turn-up of street children registering at a catering centre in Yei was high but support is not adequate.
Network of Education and Empowerment for Sustainable Services or NEESS runs a day centre for 65 street children in Yei.Teacher Samson Taban Augustine told Radio Easter on Monday that in three days 45 children registered for the new academic year and the 20 remaining places would be filled soon.
Mr Taban explained that some of the children have their parents but mistreatment Ð including beatings, heavy work, lack of schooling and bad parental control Ð forced them into the streets.
He said street kids resorted to chewing some narcotic plants, stealing or selling clothes along the road.
Mr Taban explained that the centre had outdated structures, small rooms and inadequate funding in order to host a larger number of street children.
The teacher appealed to the government and NGOs to intervene and support the centre to host more street children as well as providing better education and services.
He revealed that the centre is funded by War Child.
