Local produce counts for half of the goods sold in Yei markets, an increase of five to ten percent.
Yei River County Assistant Commissioner of Agricultural Edmond Taban Gogo told Radio Easter on Wednesday that the products sold in Yei markets come half from local producers and the other half from Uganda, Radio Easter reported.Mr Taban said productivity in all five payams of Yei River County is competitive.
He called on farmers to get loans to buy tools and seeds and start planning the next season instead of waiting for official aid.
Mr Taban said the earlier the farmers plant the better because the crops will resist pests and mature earlier.
The official explained that the migration of the youth from rural to urban areas reduced productivity leaving elders and children to work in the fields.
Mr Taban pointed out that his department faced shortage of tools, lack of onsite training, bad roads and limited markets for farmers to sell their goods.
