The economic situation of South Sudan is quite challenging since the country stopped receiving oil revenues for over one year but a good customs law and easier trade practices could be the key away from the crisis.

Presidential Advisor on Economic Affairs Aggrey Tisa Sabuni said the Customs Development and Trade Facilitation Programme represented a timely opportunity to diversify the sources of income for the Government.

Mr Tisa said government and development partners should focus on the customs development and trade to diversify the economy.

He said the non oil revenue potentials in South Sudan could equal oil revenue if the government unlocked restrictions that hinder non oil revenue potentials.

Trade Mark East Africa Country Director Eugene Torero said his company will work with the South Sudan Chamber of Commerce to establish a national oversight committee to follow the customs development programme and ease trade practices.

He said the programme success depends on a Customs Law supported on international best practices of trade facilitation.

Mr Torero reiterated his commitment to use their experience in other regions to build a modern customs services in South Sudan.

The speakers were talking during the launch of South Sudan Customs Development and Trade Facilitation Programme on Monday to boost non-oil revenues and facilitate trade.
