The National Health Minister has called on the host communities of Sudanese refugees in Maban County, Upper Nile State, to take the Hepatitis E outbreak seriously.
Minister Michael Milly Hussen told journalists in Juba that a total of 4,870 refugees were infected by Hepatitis E and 107 died in four camps of Maban County.He said the situation was of great concern and cases continue to increase every day stretching health services to the limits.
The four Maban County camps host about 111,500 refugees from Blue Nile State.
Dr Milly explained that the Hepatitis E outbreak was detected in Jamam and Gendarassa camps last July and slowly spread to Yusuf Batil and Doro camps.
He said the cases declined in November last year but there was a sudden upsurge in early December until today.
The minister described the situation in Maban County as very serious and urged UN agencies to provide technical and financial support needed to face the great human crisis.
